See Sargent’s “Fireworks” in Brooklyn for the Fourth of July! His Italian Gardens are visting Brooklyn.

2 River Gods are guarding the Villa! Have you seen the Sargent Show of Watercolors yet?   His Italian Gardens are visiting the Brooklyn Museum—only a hop, skip and a jump away from the Brooklyn Botanic Garden….His side-angled, sun-bathed “Villa di Marlia, Lucca,” 1910, portrays Giardino dei Limoni — Lemon garden (a potted lemon tree garden) surrounding a large ornamental water garden pool encircled by a stone balustrade, presided over by two statues of Giants, River Gods representing the local rivers Arno and Serchio who are holding urns which spout water into pool. The extreme high contrast in lighting is so luscious! It epitomizes “Late afternoon Sun!”  Sargent’s study of the Light especially on the stone  Statuary is really is why he caught the side view of the Gods with the light pouring in from the right. You can visit many of the sites Sargent painted in the Show at the Brooklyn Museum, now up through July 28, 2013

Another view! Villa di Marlia, Lucca: A Fountain, 1910.  A Photograph 100 years later reveals the view!

Villa di Marlia, Lucca: The Balustrade.  The Brooklyn Museum website: “At least one photograph taken by Sargent at Marlia suggests that he may have employed photography to test or record his compositions. He began the Marlia watercolors by defining the sculptural foreground elements with loosely sketched layers of contrasting colors. He then roughed in the backdrops of dense greenery to throw the glare-struck forms into even stronger relief.”

Villa Marlia, Lucca  …. on my list of Italian Gardens to see!

These River Gods are well perched for eternity in the frontal view.

Fountain at Brooklyn Botanical Garden

Sargent would love the light at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, especially the end of day lighting.

Fountain at Brooklyn Botanical Garden

Golden Sunlight and rich deep Saturated Shadows that Sargent would look for!

Azaleas at Brooklyn Botanical Garden

Azaleas at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden in  late afternoon …..

Great Perspective!

Azaleas and Wisteria at Brooklyn Botanical Garden

And the Dramatic Wisteria Vines (another blogpost) hanging rapturously from their Pergolas…..all awaiting watercolors by the Sargent-lovers that many of us are! The Gardens of NYC are awaiting your visit! And on July 6 you can Visit the Brooklyn Botanic Garden in the day and the Brooklyn Museum at night  til 11 pm on the Target First Saturdays… What a combo of gardens in the day and art at night!  The spring blooms of Azaleas, peonies, wisteria, bluebells, cherry blossoms, lilacs are gone and Lilies are in. (Recall Sargent’s paintings of lilies!) Sargent is in bloom right now in Brooklyn in July and I wouldn’t miss it!!!!  This famous American Ex-Pat Artist is back in Brooklyn, New York for the July 4th weekend!  For many of us who love art, Sargent’s “Fireworks” are better than the Fireworks on the 4th of July….  And NY’s July Fourth Fireworks are spectacular….! See Both!
